Cancer support group meets Tuesday

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo. Those newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome, as well as interested caregivers and supportive family members.

The group meets to share cancer related issues and to lend support to one another.

HVNP marks 99th birthday with free admission

The National Park Service turns 99 years old on Tuesday and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ‑ which marked its 99th birthday on Aug. 1 ‑ wants to give park visitors a present ­‑ free admission on Tuesday.

To encourage people to discover everything a park experience can be, there is a list of 99 ways to “Find Your Park.” Hawaii Volcanoes is a great place to try No. 40, feel the sand between your toes (hike to Halape); No. 36, hit the road (Chain of Craters Road); or No. 42, learn about endangered species (nene).

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2016. Founded on Aug. 1, 1916, Hawaii Volcanoes was the 15th national park established in the U.S. Last year, nearly 1.7 million park visitors enjoyed the site and added $136,838,700 to the local economy and supported 1,672 area jobs.

Meeting will explain highway widening project

The Hawaii Department of Transportation will hold a public informational meeting about the Queen Kaahumanu Highway Widening Project, Phase 2, to update the community of planned construction and anticipated traffic impacts.

The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School cafeteria.

This second phase of the project will widen the existing highway from two to four lanes over 5.2 miles from Kealakehe Parkway to Kona International Airport. The construction notice-to-proceed date is Sept. 1. Representatives from Hawaii Department of Transportation, Goodfellow Bros. Inc. and SSFM International present details of the project.

SOUL Center opens in Kailua-Kona

The SOUL Center For Well Being is a new healing center located in the Kona Brewery Block.

Drs. Michelle Craft and Dustin Craft, the founders, specialize in a wellness care called reorganizational healing. This is a combination of network chiropractic, a gentle touch healing and alignment, and The 12 Stages of Healing with SRI. Combined this recalibrates and upgrades the nervous system, benefiting all areas. Benefits include healing from pain, better ability to process stress, elevation of mood and increased energy.

Nelson appointed store manager

KapohoKine Adventures, a tour company conducting expeditions around Kona, Hilo and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has appointed Quinn Nelson store manager. Nelson will oversee daily operations including inventory management, staff scheduling and guest tour assistance.

Most recently, Nelson was the service supervisor at Puna Kamalii Flowers Inc., where she worked with the disabled adults program. In addition to her new position with KapohoKine Adventures, Nelson is the head competitive coach at Pacific Gymnastics.
